The Center for American Progress is recommending that the following programs be cut from our public schools. It's insidious.
Academics for American History and Civics (reason to cut:too narrow. Yes, we're all global now. Why study American History?)
We the People (course in Civic education) (reason:too narrow. Why study the Constitution or Bill of Rights?)
Excellence in Economic Education (reason:too narrow. Why would anyone in the United States need to learn anything about financial matters?)
Since the Progressive Agenda is to move in the opposite direction from our God-inspired Constitution toward socialism, then it's imperative that they wean the American Public away from the principles of the Founding Fathers. Actually, this has been going on for over 100 years with Progressive Presidents such as Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt.
Obama is a Progressive and is moving us toward these progressive goals like he is on speed. The main group to promote the progressive agenda is the Center for American Progress. They are ANTI-CONSTITUTION, ANTI-DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, ANTI-FOUNDING FATHERS, and ANTI-RELIGION (they have a twisted take on religion, or at least Obama does. More on that later).
They believe that the vast majority of people are too stupid to take care of themselves or make good decisions so a huge vast government should tell them what to do. They make this attractive by telling us that they will take care of all our needs. The word for this is SLAVERY!!! Total dependency on something else is a form of SLAVERY. The government will FORCE everyone to do things its way under the guise that it is saving us from ourselves. What they are doing is robbing us of our freedom, liberty, and the agency God gave us to work out our own salvation. This is why Progressivism is so evil. It is just like Satan's plan to FORCE everyone to "do right". Progressive Elites believe "they know best."
But they need our tax dollars and will not hesitate to place huge tax burdens on us to the breaking point. In the Book of Mormon the issue of burdensome taxes being evil is brought up many times.
Pres. Benson talked about the Constitution hanging by a thread and Obama and the Progressives are the ones shredding it. In the Last Days there are many ways that even the very elect will be deceived. I believe that those LDS who support Obama and the Progressive agenda are being deceived, I'm sorry to say. I mean he is a Marxist Socialist for goodness sakes.

Great leaders in history have led people with the optimistic outlook that most individuals are good, honest, hard working people that will make the right decisions if taught correct principles and left to govern themselves. It's based on trust and faith in human nature. Great leaders inspire their followers to do and be better on their own. I tend to feel that progressives have absolutely no trust in human nature whatsoever. How would the human race survive with out them??? Or it's all just a ploy to obtain power, control and riches like you point out. They're all deceived. Lots of modern day Korihors...
