Here, near Murfreesboro, TN, a 3 day battle around New Years Day,1862-3, (think cold) the North barely beat the South. 25,000 casualties. 
These plaques say it all.

wow. sad. so many lives. we freak out now when 10 people are killed in battle, imagine that many in one little instance.
It gives me the chills to see all those graves and headstones all in a row. wow.
